Bristolwood and Beyond

Whooo

could resist the face of this little Saw Whet Owl?

Today was my turn to drive the forty-some miles to take Daughter to college. After dropping her off, I had a six hour time slot. What to do?

I love nature and so I pulled a map out and discovered that Mendon Ponds Park was not too far from the college. I love this county park because in the winter months, one can actually feed birds by hand! Yes, the birds land on open hands to receive food.

I walked around a little at the park, taking a few photos of flowers and looking for wildlife. Unfortunately, food is plentiful right now, so the birds were off doing other things.

I was feeling a bit defeated, so I walked around just trying to relax. Just then, I caught sight of a young woman with a heavy leather glove on her hand, a tiny owl perched upon it!

The woman called out to me and asked if I ever had visited the wild wings display? I had not. I asked if I could photograph the little Saw Whet Owl and she said yes, but don't get too close!

Afterwards, I went over to see the most amazing display! There were all sorts of birds....owls, a turkey vulture, hawks, kestrels, a golden American eagle and even a bald eagle. I was so elated to see all these birds. They had been injured...several struck by cars, but they seemed happy enough living in huge quarters where they would be protected from further harm.

There was also a bobcat there, but the naughty kitty went and hid behind a barrier, making it impossible for me to see her!
