On The Up
It was Edinburgh's Doors Open Day today and as Mr Flum and I are quite nosey curious we usually plan our visits so we can attend as many venues as possible.
Not today, though, as we were due to take the afternoon shift at the charity shop so we only managed a couple of visits.
This is the White House in Craigmillar, a B-Listed Art Deco building built in 1936 as a road house at the time that cars were becoming popular, as an alternative to the traditional public house for family outings.
Sadly this building had sustained fires, delapidation, vandalism and rot before its rescue by compulsory purchase. As the building had undergone several alterations in the past complete restoration has been possible only by reference to the original architectural drawings. This staircase was among the few unaffected features but the White House is now restored in the original style and is currently in use for community purposes.
