Newhaven Station

Doors Open Day(2) saw us down at the old Newhaven Station which is under restoration.

The station is one of only a few timber-boarded station buildings in Scotland, opened in January 1879 originally serving the Edinburgh, Leith and Granton Branches of the Caledonian Line. Since it closed in 1962 under the Beeching plan it has been empty, apart from a spell as a workshop, and deteriorating. In the photo you see the walkway and the gate which would have led to the steps down to the platforms and the cycle path below where one set of rails ran.

When restoration is complete it is expected to be as office space available for rent although it is hoped that it may be possible to create a museum. The first exhibit would be the original ticket window which was found among the debris and has been restored.
