Dumfries House

We took advantage of the sunshine and went on a little day trip to Dumfries House today.

I'd never heard of it until it was featured on Britain's Hidden Heritage on the BBC about a month and a half ago. It's fascinating to visit because most of the decorations and furnishings in the house date back to when the house was built in the 1750s, and aside from the addition of two wings during the Victorian era, the house and most of its treasured contents remain largely unchanged and in excellent condition or magnificently restored. Unfortunately (but understandably), photography isn't allowed within the house, so here's a view of the front of the building, with one of the added Victorian wings to the left.

If you're ever in East Ayrshire, I would definitely recommend visiting Dumfries House. Although do be aware that to visit the house, you have to book in advance, you can't just drop by (though the small cafe is open everybody, as are the grounds).
