Blow Holes at Depoe Bay
What an spectacular day! As we drove down the coast, we noticed that the ocean was churning and roiling! We stopped at Boiler Bay to watch the waves crash over the rocks. I saw my first blow hole--a hole in the lava rock that allows the waves to crash upward into the air. I was amazed.
We then drove to Depoe Bay, which sports the world's smallest bay. Along this little bay front are several blow holes which were spouting 40-50 feet in the air! It was spectacular--better than the 4th of July! We sat on the bay wall and watched it for 1 1/2 hours! This picture shows just one of the eruptions! It was so cool--the mist would come up first, then the water would erupt into the air! The sound was amazing. I got thoroughly soaked as I tried to get down the street! We were treated to this show because of a very high tide--supposedly the highest in 50 years, contributed to by the typhoons in the Pacific!
Afterward we went to Newport to eat clam chowder at Georgie's, the restaurant that serves the best clam chowder in Oregon, in my humble opinion! Another movie, games of Yahtzee and Crown Five, and off to bed at 1:00 a.m.!!
