Democratic deficit?

Here's a section of an interesting yet disturbing art work. It's an installation by Oliver Walker called Mr Democracy and it's part of the Democratic Promenade exhibition which opened today at The Bluecoat arts centre as part of the Liverpool City of Radicals year of events.

Taking as his starting point the fact that this country (like, I think, New Zealand and Israel) doesn't have a written constitution, Walker commissioned three Chinese law professors to write one! He then commissioned 1,000 dolls to be produced by three Chinese factories. Each doll has a voice chip which speaks the new constitution when pressed.

It's an imposing piece which provides plenty of food for thought about democracy, trade and globalisation.

Don't have nightmares...
