A Steep Steeple
In the south end of our little downtown...we have what I call Dueling Steeples. One church on one corner...another church across the street. It's the Presbyterians vs. the Episcopalians. The Presbys are upping the ante with a huge restoration project. I think this worker must have drawn the short straw in having to work on the steep steeple.
Years ago, a young friend was getting married in this church. She wanted to give the minister a special gift. She asked me to make a birdhouse replica of the church. It was going along smoothly until I got to the steeple. I thought back to the days I used to day-dream during Geometry and Algebra, and wished I would have paid attention. The angles were killing me. I just couldn't translate them into the project. After several attempts...her math-whiz dad had to finish the project.
Miss Remley...I am so, so, sorry. (She was my math teacher.) 20 years after getting out of high school...I was in Miss Remleys line for a parent-teacher conference for my daughter. She saw me coming towards her...put her 2 hands together...and made the sign of the cross. "STAY AWAY FROM ME...YOU EVIL BOY!!" I couldn't believe she was treating me like a vampire. I smiled, then she smiled. At least it was good to be remembered. The math classes severely crippled my grade point average. A little tiny bit of effort on my part might have helped.
The steep steeple is set against a clear blue sky. It is a lovely fall day here. I hope the worker stays safe.
