Thursday: Cockpit Steps
Nightshifts = nighttime wanderings again......
And so to Cockpit Steps, one of London's most haunted spots. It is said that a headless lady is often seen moving across the pavement and drifting over the road to St James's Park, just on the other side road. 'The Times' reported in 1804 that two Coldstream Guards were so frightened by her that they were confined to hospital, where they remained seriously ill for some time. In 1972, a motorist driving along here late at night collided with a lamppost when he swerved to avoid a woman in a red dress who suddenly appeared before him. Amazingly, the driver was acquitted of dangerous driving because there were sufficient records to show that this was indeed a common sighting here.
It is said that she was the wife of an army sergeant (there are still army barracks very close by) who killed her in a jealous rage, before beheading her and burying her body in the park.......
I didn't linger long enough to see if she would materialise.
