Feeding frenzy

A couple of colleagues and I went for a walk along the canal at lunchtime when Jack exclaimed: 'What is that?'

Coming straight down the canal at us, legs frantically splashing the surface of the water, white beak open and wings beating in a blur was an adult coot.

We soon saw what he had noticed from afar - a roll had been thrown into the canal, and his wife and kids were having a feast. Not to be left out, he soon joined in the feed-fest. There were beaks, legs and feathers everywhere! The young coots have certainly learned fast to snap up the tasty lunchtime morsels of passers-by.
