salt cod on line
So, in Bonavista at last. The long rain sodden journey from st John"s is definitely worth it for the huge party thrown last night at Bradley's new house: the band played until 7 am: almost loud enough to wake the dead in the cemetary just by the back garden.
I hit the sack just after 7am and was docked a few more points.....
The rest of the day (after midday) was spent sightseeing. It is very beautiful here and the weather obliged with an almost summery dose of sunshine and warmth. There are too many bllipping opportunities here: the puffins, the Dungeon, the fishing boats etc, but this was the most striking for me.
The whole of Newfoundland has been dependent on fishing for centuries and this tradition continues. Here we see cod, just after it has been salted being dried and cured in the sun on a line in the back yard.
The owner of this house and the fisherman who caught the cod (Jimmy Fisher believe it or not) would not allow himself to be photographed but explained that there are no birds to trouble the fish here. Not sure what the plastic/paper ties on the line are for though.
The day culminated with a full Jiggs dinner (salt-beef and boiled vegetables) followed by a screeching ceeremony after which we can call ourselves Newfoundlers.
