Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Tuesdays with Morrie -- No!

Tuesdays with Rosie -- well sort of!

"Goodbye Rudy Tuesday" is surely much closer to what my students were thinking this morning when the in-class essay was completed! They were ready to stamp that baby "Finished" and submit it.

They were quite surprised when I announced that we were moving to the room next door so that they could use the computers. Of the 23 students present today, 4 wrote the essay in handwriting. The past several weeks I had asked if they preferred handwriting or word processing. So you know their answer.

I've always enjoyed reading and grading in-class essays. The focus is the content and the surface errors are not so important, unless it is evident that a student just cannot spell or organize words to make sense. The grading just seems more "pure." I've also found that they either come well prepared and earn top scores or they don't prepare and fail.

So I think they sort of liked me today -- because of the computers. They also liked that I told them that next week's quiz is being postponed for a week. I had to get smelling salts for the ones that fainted (I'm kidding), but I had looked at the calendar and realized we could afford a little slow-down (and I need time to catch-up on grading papers). So they exited the room minus the stress of next week's test. I think they were in love with me (I'm kidding).

So I captured a photo of each side of the room, which includes their textbooks on my table so I could check to see who is doing the work and who's not and then know why some earn "A"s and some don't. The camera also captured the sweets on the table. I always bring candy to class. I think most writing classes are "bitter" for students, so they need a little sweet.

That was my Tuesday!

Good night from Southern California (where it rained today!).
