Goede Verwachting

was the original name for this ship, built in 1897, it has also been known as Katriana and Good Hope. Nowadays it is Generation Journey, after the charity of the same name. Doesn't seem to be doing much at the moment. It's moored at Pin Mill, just a few miles up the road from us.

Pin Mill is a lovely little hamlet, at the foot of quite a steep hill, sitting on the bank of the River Orwell. The centre of attractions here, apart from the river, is the Butt and Oyster, a 17th century pub, famous for it wide ranging menu.

I can remember a scene from a Lovejoy episode being shot in and around Pin Mill and the pub. A short walk though the National trust woods and you come across dozens of house boats moored stern-in.

I can understand why some wish to live here - it's beauty, stillness, wildfowl for starters. Don't fancy it so much in the winter though. If you do, a boat requiring full renovation is up for sale for £85000 - a snip surely?
