Campanile...

The world's most famous campanile is probably the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or maybe the Campanile di San Marco in St Mark's Square, Venice.

This is a humble little campanile. It was devised by the architect James McLachlan in 1929 in his design for what was then Morningside Congregational Church.

Not only can it not compete with its Italian cousins in scale, but this is actually (to mix languages) a faux campanile.

So the great carillons of the Italian campanile may ring out a couple of dozen bells of joy - but at Holy Corner Edinburgh only the sound of traffic!
