Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott...

The hymn "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" was written by Martin Luther. It may have been sung by his party when they processed into the Diet of Worms in 1521 to defend themselves against charges of heresy. Here the Reformation began - and this is Reformation Sunday. The image of the fortified city of middle Europe was a strong symbol for the Reformers of the protection of God.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
