Jackspeak - A guide to Royal Navy and Royal Marines Slanguage.
Fighting Knife. Most people know this dagger as the 'Commando Knife,' well yes it is, but it's correct description, and intended use, is as a fighting knife. Basically it's all metal, a stiletto, but nothing you would want on your Jimmy Choos. There is a major drawback to the knife. It's double edged; you have all seen images of hero types with knives held in their teeth. Do that with this knife and you will end up looking like the Joker from Batman. Designed by Fairbairn-Sykes they were used to great effect in WW2. History of Fairbairn Sykes knife.
Top left is the Brunswick Star worn on the front of the Royal Marines Pith Helmet. The attached link is worth viewing for one photograph of the Royal Marines detachment drawn up on the quarterdeck of HMS Jamaica in ceremonial gear with bayonets fixed. Jim Robinson tells me that when they presented arms the bayonets went straight up through the protective sun awning; he further assures me that nobody fell about laughing, much. Pith Helmet
Top right is the Locket Union the belt buckle fitted to the RM white belt for ceremonial occasions.
Bottom right is the GSM or General Service Medal with clasp, this one for service in N.I.
Bottom left the Cap Badge, commonly known as the Globe and Buster the two cap badges worn with the green beret. Anodised for spoofing around in smarter uniforms and dark for normal working rig and dodgy occasions. Most Military units display their battle honours on their standards or flags, the Royal Marines were given the unique distinction of The Globe representing all the places they have fought, awarded 1827. The Laurel Leaves were awarded for action at Belle Isle 1761.
The Corps was founded on 28th October 1664, so yesterday was 'our' birthday. :-)
If you have possession of either your own memorabilia or those of your relatives there are many places to get them tidied up, new ribbons etc. and placed in a presentation package such as this, you may even include a photograph and any badges you have; they include a nameplate in brass. I would recommend Honours and Awards. a company, to whom I have no links. Have a look throught their photo pages, you'll see my box at 9 or 10.
