Small Mayan villages line the shores of Atitlan, set off by steep hills draped with oak and pine trees and ~1000 species of plants.

It is a caldera formed due to a volcanic eruption ~ 85,000 years ago. It is surrounded by famous volcanoes- Volcán Atitlán (12K ft), Volcán Tolimán (11K ft), and Volcán San Pedro (10K ft)
