Helter-skelter

Training Day!

Today I went to a training day for new volunteers at Wakehurst. Although it was my first formal training day, I felt a bit of an 'old hand' as I've been there a year already. Of course, there's always something new to learn and so it was very interesting, as well as being good to meet some of the new people.

Part of the day was spent in the Seed Bank. This shot was taken in the first of two Drying Rooms. When seeds first arrive from around the world, they are kept here in very low humidity for several weeks until they are ready for cleaning. Often they are still in the bags they arrived in and the scientists sometimes get a nasty shock when they open them!
