Tomorrowland

I've visited the Riksdag in Stockholm and the Folketing in Copenhagen, and both are housed in really impressive buildings that invoke an image of government that is majestic and powerful. The Riksdag building is on it's own island in the heart of the city. The Folketing meets in the Christiansborg palace, a grand structure on the center island with a huge stone court out in front.

In complete contrast is the Storting building in Oslo. The building itself is made of unusual yellow brick, and has a distinctive round core. It's on the central thoroughfare in the city, surrounded by sidewalks, cafes, sportsbars, and a Max Burger. Out front there is a small plaza with benches and trees. I've always really enjoyed this building and the square outside because I feel like it projects a kind of quiet power. It's a dignified building that sees no need to compete with the grand parliaments in Europe, and instead brings itself to the level of the people.

I picked up a few 10 NOK cheeseburgers this evening, and enjoyed a few peaceful moments outside Stortinget. There were some candles and placards placed outside, and I somehow neglected to read them, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the balmy 12 degree weather.
