The Stiletto on the Fencepost
No-one knew who picked up the stiletto and put it on the fencepost. By 'stiletto' I mean a lady's high-heel pump, not a dagger. Some passer-by must have just picked it up out of the dust and put it there, like the owner would limp back looking for it. A pretty fancy shoe; I don't think it was lost by Old Mother Riley.
It was about fifty yards from the car that the Highway Patrol had called in just before midnight. It was a '51 two-door Buick, both doors wide open and a dead man slumped half-way out the driver's seat. He had a big hole in his head and I don't mean his mouth. It looked like Cinderella was packing a .45 .
I have no idea of the real circumstances of how this shoe ended up on this post by a track just outside of Kirkwall.
