Debra
Couldn't get close enough to get good shots of the action on stage tonight, without distracting the audience from the show, so here's Debra, who is House Manager for the Rhodo Revue.
She started at 4.30 (after a full day at her 'real' job) with a briefing by the Director regarding timing of intervals, protocol for unclaimed tickets, liaising with the Stage Manager and other critical details, then moved on to briefing her helpers (including me), checking that the hall and toilets were clean, then cleaning them because they weren't (I don't know what the cleaners imagine constitutes cleaning, but they never seem to do it...). Then greeting the audience, checking their tickets, guessing which party people are with ("I paid for my ticket, but I'm not sure who has it... no, I don't know whose name the booking is under...")
... two intervals later, (about 9.30) and she's counting the ticket and raffle money in the kitchen while act 3 proceeds. I took a dozen shots from about 3 feet away and she was oblivious until I said "I'm wondering when you're going to realise I'm taking your photograph" - smile - click!
Then of course there's cleaning up after the audience and setting up the hall ready for tomorrow's show. I think she finally knocked off about 11.00.
Raving on a bit here, but there are so many unsung heroes involved in community projects like this. The actors get the applause (and they certainly deserve it), but it's the likes of Debra (and her team of 8) that look after the audience and make sure they're enjoying themselves before the show even starts. As one of her 'minions', I have to say I don't think I've ever encountered a more efficient and charming 'boss' - she didn't miss a thing and even provided snacks and wine for us.
I'll be back!
