Cash Card
This is a common and somewhat sad sight throughout the city, old folks gathering cardboard they can trade at recycling centres for small amounts of cash.
In fairness, this guy has his shit down using an electric buggy, most are forced to push a cart or the odd few cycle. Cold, wind, rain or shine they're at it day in day out, collecting card, metal or plastic.
I'm told they make just a few pounds a day doing this, and it pains me to see members of a generation that endured the Korean war, and the poverty and hardships thereafter, resorting to making money like this.
As I don't quite know the full story, I tell myself that coming from a generation with a superhuman work ethic, perhaps they do it out of choice - a way of keeping busy and earning a bit of extra cash, rather than sitting around idle as old age digs its heels in.
It's hard to beleive that's the case - but a man can hope.
