shortage
Driving around Lilongwe there is one striking thing.
The Fuel Queue.
It is the topic most talked about, most worried about and most extraordinary. There is very little fuel in Malawi, so when a tanker is due to arrive the grapevine starts and the rush to the pumps begins. It is not unusual that 8 hours later (yes 8 hours later) you may reach the front of the queue, but that is no guarantee there is any fuel left. Then the same happens tomorrow.
There was even an offer on 'Lilongwe Chat' (a local ads website) for a swap 'two crates of Carlsberg green for 5 litres of petrol'. That might be taken down however as it was also announced that beer was running out due to a lack of bottle tops and the carbonation machine breaking (also why there was no tonic in Malawi)
...........beer or fuel, beer or fuel......
