Between fen and mountains

Lavoir

No these are not the washing up sinks at the local camping site. This is in fact the local lavoir or washing house and the hot water runs freely all day with no tap to stop it. This is the hot water from the local springs and although the facility is not much used, there are still some who take their washing down. The social occasion of this shared enterprise is something that we have lost (not that I am advocating the abolition of the washing machine!). So much has changed and so rapidly. The other day, failing to get a reply to a text I had sent to my granddaughter- she gets so many- I decided to get out my fountain pen and write a long letter, explaining the merits of old fashioned correspondence (you will not stumble across an old text or email at the back of a drawer in years to come). She was delighted. Remember the days when phone calls were made in a cold hall and long distance trunk calls were only made at Christmas. No I can't be that old!
