A new archway
This archway was erected as part of the development of the Wynyard Quarter. It is placed on the Wynyard side of the old Viaduct Harbour Bridge. The old bridge connected the central city (near Prince's Wharf) to a viaduct across the water to the Wynyard wharves.
When the America's Cup was held in Auckland the Viaduct area was redeveloped, and the viaduct itself was demolished, making the old bridge redundant. The new development has seen the building of a new bridge which (like this old one did) opens to allow tall boats through.
This bridge is a rolling lift bridge. It was built in Darlington, England, by the Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company. It was shipped to New Zealand in kit form in 1931, and erected on site. Carrying both rail and road traffic when down, it was lifted to allow fishing boats into the basin.
LATE ADDITION
Have turned off the television reporting of the election result, as the result seems fairly clear. A massive vote for the National party government which will leave them tantalizingly short of being able to govern alone. Almost certainly the result of Winston Peters' revival with NZ First getting nearly 7% of the vote and therefore 10 MPs. Will be an interesting political situation, with NZ First and Greens getting nearly a fifth of the party vote , not much less than Labour.
