Hunting
This morning the orcas made their third appearance in three days, and despite the competing attractions of elephant seals,long-tailed meadowlarks, striated caracaras, yet more gentoo penguins and even some trees (as unusual on Falkland as on Shetland), I thought I needed to mark my departure from Sea Lion Island by posting an orca image.
As in the last few days the orcas have been appearing regularly for the last three days early in the morning and in the evening, both along the beach and around the lagoon looking for seal pups. A successful orca kill around Sea Lion is accompanied by lots of splashing in the water - and the arrival of lots of Southern Giant Petrels (huge albatross-like bird who are always looking for something to scavenge)
The blip is one of the two adults turning in the pool - which is less than 20 metres across, and presents a real challenge for the adults unless the tide is really high.
