Wood carving

Whilst going through my parents house I found one of my fathers completed carvings. It is of a very upright diving bird or duck about 15 inches tall. I am not sure what breed it represents; to be honest it reminds me most of Noggin the Nogs pet Graculus.
The bird appears to be standing on a large rock, shaped rather than carved. Unfortunately there is a crack in the wood that also goes over the birds feet. This would have annoyed my father; I think it adds personality to the piece
