Oh look! Birds!!

The area of my classroom where we sit as a class has large windows overlooking the main field part of our grounds. At playtimes we put out a couple of small goals and have a limited number playing football - or their version of it which mainly entails trying to trip people up and lots of diving!!

Sitting with a couple of children one of them suddenly started to giggle and I looked up to see several gulls on the area between the goals. Clearly the football activity had brought worms to the surface. The children thought it hilarious that the birds might be playing their own version of football.

One of them then asked what sort of birds they were. "They're seagulls," replied a friend. Cue teacher informing them that there is no such thing as a seagull! We then went through an identification process - colour of beak, legs, feathers, other markings - and then looked online. Great excitement when they were identified as Black-Headed Gulls in 'winter clothes'!! Smart aren't they? The gulls AND the children of course LOL

P.S. We have lots of bird boxes and hedgehog boxes too. Green Woodpeckers visit as well as all the usual suspects!
