Sun on the ramparts
Walking around the oldest part of the village this morning I was often dazzled by the low sun shining along the narrow streets and I liked the way it highlights the textures on this wall. There was a Roman settlement here at least as long ago as the first century BC and an aquaduct to carry water to Béziers, but the visible remains inside the ramparts are much more recent....only 500 years or so! The original ramparts probably date from the 10th century but have been built into and over many times since. There is a real sense of a very long past in these old streets.
The village was one of the first to have bilingual signs in French and Occitan in all its streets, the Occitan names being put up in 1997. They often have different meanings, so can be misleading as an aid to translation, but here they mean the same.
