Grey whale
We had a nice breakfast at the Seascape Restaurant. Took some nice pictures on the pier, and they would have been my picture choice for my blip, but this one trumped all of them put together.
After breakfast we headed north on the PCH to the Elk Prairie campgrounds and saw some elk, then we hiked Prarie Creek and saw the Big Tree & the Cathedral of Trees.
After the hike we continued on the PCH to Coastal Drive along the Klamath River. As we rounded the corner there was a big group people on the side of the road, right on the small bridge, so we decided to see what was going on. We found out that a mom and baby grey whale had been there all week swimming back and forth. I took about a gazillion pictures in the short time we were there. There was a woman there that had been there for 4 days and she would spend her morning taking pictures of the whales and there were also 3 grad students there documenting their every move. It was incredible - the whales were no more than 30 to 40 feet from where we were standing!
We then drove by the Trees of Mystery with the large statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe that stand at the entrance.
After such an exciting morning, we were famished and settled down for lunch at the Chart Room in Crescent City.
We then continued on the 101 to Florence, OR. Today was our 4 year official wedding anniversary and we decided to splurge on a hotel. We stayed at the Driftwood Shores and had a room that overlooked the beach and the Pacific Ocean. Before dinner we had a nice beer on our patio while watching the magnificent sunset.
Dinner was at the Surfside Restaurant that was part of the hotel, so we didn't have to get into the car yet again. We enjoyed a nice meal with steamed clams, crab louie, shrimp scampi and lots of nice white wine.
After dinner we thought we'd go for a swim, but the water was less than ideal, so we swam a lap then ran back to our room - perfect day.
