The Ouse at Lewes
As I wasn't on spaniel walking duty this morning I took myself down to the river Ouse at Offham just before dawn and walked along the very muddy river bank into Lewes and back. Walking fom north to south the Norman castle dominates the skyline and is probably similar to the view that Simon de Montfort's troops would have had as they trudged this way in May 1264 heading for the high ground west of Lewes prior to one of the main battles in the Second Barons' War. Despite being outnumbered two to one de Montfort's forces defeated Henry III's army.
