Dave

I was watching some old Top Of The Pops compilation thing the other night when it got remarked on about David Bowie being 65. The performance I happened to be looking at was 'Starman' from 1972 and there's something about the way that his Royal Daveness shares his mic with Mick Ronson that brings out the pop fan in me like you wouldn't believe. It encapsulates something great from that era very simply and concisely.

When Bob Dylan was all over the TV and radio a few years ago they had pundits queuing up to proclaim his greatness and try to identify the man's mystique. Someone piped up that you could actually claim Bowie was far more importantly culturally in terms of innovation and his chameleon-like qualities. Most of the panel didn't agree but the point had been made. And the point has been remembered.

Here's that ace TOTP performance in full.
