Styes of Aikerness

This is a sort of diary shot rather than interesting for its own sake. I was back volunteering with the RSPB at Styes of Aikerness removing non-native lodgepole pine. I was to build bonfires but, in spite of firelighter, kindling, and plenty of newspapers, I and the others just couldn't get a decent blaze going. It's been raining for weeks so that didn't help. We left in a bit of a downpour. Back next week, hopefully the weather will be more suitable for fires.

The name suggests pigs were quartered here but it may be that stone for styes was taken from a neolithic chamber, the remains of which can still be seen. The masonry seemed far too large to be from mere styes.
