Icefield

Today's the day ............................. to be in the middle of winter

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone

One of my favourite Christmas carols and one which perfectly describes the day today. The beautiful words are actually taken from a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) - sister of Dante Gabriel. It wasn't published until 1904 - after her death and it appeared as a carol in The English Hymnal in 1906.

The view is looking towards Kendal Fell up behind our house. Anywhere out of the sun stayed frozen all day after another cold night. We are now right in the middle of winter - which means that we are half way to spring. I don't think we can complain either. The first half of winter has been relatively easy to cope with compared with last year.

Let's hope it stays that way ................................
