Cock & Bull story

This is the sign from the Cock Hotel in Stony Stratford. It is next door to the Bull Hotel. Both are in the High Street and when Stony Stratford was the first stop out of London, people would bring news from the city but, by the time it had been recycled a few times in the Cock and the Bull, it had become garbled.

That's where the expression "a cock and bull story" comes from. The High Street, Stony Stratford.

And they are still there, probably having the same effect as they have had for hundreds of years...
