A Day of Reflections

A branch and reflections in the pond, Maxwell Park. Something organic about the shape brought back memories of Hilary and her sculptural creations. The heron was on the island, having a snooze.

This evening I attended the 12th Holocaust Memorial Lecture at Glasgow University, given by Professor Nicholas Stargardt, Magdalen College, Oxford - "Hidden children : surviving the Holocaust". A very moving illustrated talk about children and the trauma they faced through displacement, separation from parents, encountering violence, loss of identity, changing character, learning new skills and languages. They kept moving, trying to flee, they learnt to hide.

We were shown children's drawings from the 1940s - horrors of the camps, including Auschwitz. It meant so much more to have been there and to have seen the place myself. The image that remains though is a street scene drawn by a young boy of men being lined up, facing a wall and executed.

Home, to news from neighbours that we are witnessing the Northern Lights here in Glasgow. I left my dinner to look, and did see some unusual light in the sky, but I'm not sure if it was.
