Colonel Sir David Stirling DSO,OBE
While out for a drive today I came accross this statue of David Stirling who was the founder of the special air service regiment in 1941.
During an operation in southern Tunisia in January 1943 David Stirling was captured and he ultimately ended up as a prisoner in Colditz Castle. For his distinguished actions whilst a prisoner he was made an OBE. In 1945 he returned from Colditz Castle and assumed duties as depty commander of the SAS brigade.
The statue was created by the artist Angela Conner and is on land that was once part of the Keir Estate, it is a short distance from Keir the family home where David Stirling spent his early life. David Stirling died on the 4th of November 1990 and his final resting place is on the shores of Loch Morar.
