The original department store

Jenners department store is situated on Princes Street in Edinburgh. It has been there since 1838 when it was founded by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and was originally known as Kennington and Jenner.

Jenners still occupies its original position on Princes Street however the building itself is not the original. The original buildings of the department store were unfortunately destroyed by a fire in 1892 and in 1893 Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store. The new building opened in 1895 and this is the building which stands on Princes Street today, the building is designated as A listed.

The department store has held a royal warrant since 1911 and Queen Elizabeth II visited the store on its 150th anniversary in 1988. In 2005 Jenners was sold to House of Fraser for £46.1 million.
