So, this the current state of the fireplace... last week it looked like this - see here

It's a real shame that a) the brickwork is so poor (ok, so it's from circa 1780, so we can't be too harsh) and b) some previous occupants decided to put a square of concrete in the midde of the original arch. Otherwise it would have been a rather attractive feature. As it is, we're going to cover it over again with plaster, apart form the large bit at the bottom that's going to have a stove in it.
