A Writer's Life

Annie and the wonderful world of sports

When I left for New York last year, one of my friends told me that, since I was going to a city that had so many professional sport teams, it was about time I got interested in them. For months, he had made me promise to not ruin sport seasons for him: I was basically forbidden to scuff when the Montreal hockey team lost, or rejoice when they were eliminated from the playoffs. My friend, however, didn't succeed in making me be even marginally interested in sports. Why these men are paid fortunes to run after a ball or a balloon is beyond me. The narratives around the sports are also way beyond my understanding of human quests.

So, in case you wondered, even though the Giants were in the Super Bowl, I didn't go to a bar with friends to watch the game. I stayed home, enjoyed a very quiet Sunday during which my attempt to work were thwarted by the need to finish the novel I had been reading for about 2 weeks. A girl has to sometimes just sit down and read all day. Not bad, for a Sunday.

But the day was coming to an end, and I still hadn't even looked at my camera. No blip in sight. So I thought: even though I'm not interested in sports, and even though I have no idea for whom my friends home and abroad were rooting, the Empire State building would provide a good picture. It's blue. The official version is that it is blue because of the Giants. But hey, if you were rooting for the Patriots, you must be feeling a bit blue right now. So this is for you too.
