Wish You Were Here!
Too icy to venture far today, so hubby told me about some possible pictures he had seen while out on his dog walking exercises.
First stop,Shildon Station, where local school children have recently been involved in brightening up the station platforms .Planters are covered in mosiacs and this row of saucy postrcard pics, adorns the length of the East bound platform.
Guess this harks back to the days of steam, when people went to the seaside for their annual holidays by train. As it happens, there was a steam train on the other line, running visitors to the 'Locomotion' museum nearby.
Shildon claims to be the cradle of the railways, with the local born Timothy Hackworth, beating George Stephenson, to deliver the first commercial steam train. It seems Stephenson had the better P.R. man.
We have lived here for over five years and I have yet to visit the centre , so perhaps over the next few months, I will run a few Blips past you, connected with the story of steam in and around Shildon.
