World book day

"Footprints"
"A man's or a woman's?"
Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered:
"Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"

Thought I would celebrate World book day with my favourite book The Hound of the Baskervilles. It appeared in the Strand magazine in 1902, confusing fans at the time as Holmes had been killed of in 1893 (The Final problem) and the novel makes no mention of this important fact.
The various films that have been made of the book have never really caught the general feeling of unease that the book generates. The main problem has been that all the films start with the killing of old man Baskerville by the hound, the book never makes this mistake only referring to it in a conversation between Holmes and the young Baskerville.
Conan Doyle then uses what has become a classic plot device, in that he seperates Watson and Holmes in the story thus making Watson more vulnerable, and delivers a terrific red herring early in the story.
