Lathyrus Odoratus

I never cease to wonder at how remarkable trees are. This pair came down on the common ten or fifteen years ago. Only a tiny proportion of the roots remain in the ground and yet all along the moss covered trunks they have continued to grow, pushing out new, vertical, 'branches' to form an impenetrable wall of wood. Is there a word for this kind of growth?
