Simply Me

A room full of memories!

When my grandfather passed away, he left me some money in his will, which I was to receive on my 18th birthday. Determined to spend it wisely, I decided to see part of the world. I booked my trip and that summer travelled through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

That was July 1999. Lots of people have gap years and go travelling these days, but back then it was still relatively new and this was something extraordinary. I remember my first couple of nights alone in Nairobi, having never been anywhere on my own before, I was terrified and phoned my mum crying my eyes out.

Of course, I didn't stay that way. I soon forgot my terror and had an amazing time. (so much so I think I forgot to then phone my mum and tell her I was ok!!) It was an experience I'll never forget.

My house is full of things I have picked up from my travels over the years and each of them contains a special memory for me. This is a traditional carved wooden Malawian chair. I bought it at the side of the road for $5 and Ian's tape player (I told you it was a while ago - we didn't even have CDs!). I got it shipped back, along with another chair and a table, to Newcastle from Lilongwe post office.

I love the way the shadows are cast on the bookcase behind.
