Silent Pool
I think it's safe to say that the four huge trout and the goldfish that someone released into Silent Pool, if not rescued, are dead.
This is drought in Surrey and Silent Pool is an excellent indicator. The level of the water, which is entirely spring fed, is largely determined by the rain that falls in the previous six to nine months. You can see where the water line should be at the roots of the trees. From the bridge you should just about touch the surface.
What you see in the centre can hardly be called water. There is just enough to keep some of the weeds alive at it's deepest point. The main spring that feeds the pond is just below where I took this photograph. It is totally dry.
There is another pond just below Silent Pool which takes the overflow and is in it's turn fed by many little springs that surface from below. Although it is not unknown for Silent Pool to dry up, Sherbourne Pond normally remains full. Not now. The water is down by at least four feet and. as there has been no significant rain for months, will soon dry out as well.
I've been out in the garden for the most part of today and am thinking that watering my plants, this summer, will be out of the question!
Thank you all for your stars and comments yesterday. My trout hit the spotlight page. Now double chuffed! :)
