Hurst Park Race Course

On the 22nd February I blipped a bit of memorabilia from Hurst Park Race Course.

Here is the only other genuine piece of the course that is left. They used to shut these gates to close off Grayburn Way to run the sprint races.

I remember as a child being introduced to a gentlemen called Bill Cracknell who had the honour to be the starter at the racecourse. A true gentlemen who always wore his bowler hat and carnation (long after he retired) He would have also been in charge of these gates.

As expected, another fine piece of Victorian engineering and they look as though they might even still close
