Abbey

I had to make the long march home with the poodles from the kennels this morning so decided to pop into Waverley Abbey on the way, just for a change of scene.

Waverley is the site of the first Cistercian Abbey in England. It was founded in 1128 when a bunch of monks decided to sail across the channel and set it up. I guess they liked the area well enough to build the abbey.

Like so many religious houses, it didn't survive Henry's purge of monastic houses and, in 1536, it was given to Sir William Fitzherbert and a lot of it was dismantled. Some of the stone 2was used to build a big house at Loseley.

This was the only time the sun decided to shine on the stones for me.
