Hull Bridge Stone

Until the twentieth century the ancient stone bridge at Hull Bridge near Tickton was the only crossing over the River Hull between Kingston upon Hull and North Frodingham.

That bridge no longer exists, but this stone from it does, incorporated into the pedestrian bridge at the original crossing site.

The Tickton bypass a hundred yards or so upstream now carries vehicles, including bicycles which are banned from the pedestrian bridge.

The inscription?

I think it says "each vessel before passing this bridge to pay one shilling".
