Leader of the Pack

We have been catching upon watching the wonderful HBO television series, John Adams, on Anytime+. HBO rarely, if ever make a bad series, and this one, about the 2nd President of the U.S.A. is particularly good.
He appears as if he was a very singular man, who, when voted as the leader of the relatively new republic, was not a popular choice with the congressmen, but was with the people and the electoral colleges.
He was quite an orator, and a man of fabulous soundbites, or quotes as they used to be called.
"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."
"There are two ways to conquer and enslave a country. One is by the sword. The other is by debt."
