The Face of Exeter
229 High Street Exeter
Who is the face of Exeter? Answer - No one in particular. This work by Alexandre Farto was commissioned by the fashion chain Urban Outfitters. He says " the idea was to provide the building with a face, to come up with a human element that faces the passing crowd- engaging the public and humanising the area in some way, -a contrast between the human dimension and the artificial environment of the urban landscape we live in."
As a result of the blitz of 1942 229 marks the point when post war reconstruction began.
The face was first painted on the side of the building and then the details were accentuated by being chiselled.
Visited the Royal Albert Memorial Museum today. Superb.
