OLYMPIC TORCHBEARER 2012
This is the Club House at Royal lytham St Annes Golf Club, and at 6.20am on Saturday 23rd June the Olympic torch leaves here to head to Manchester. This will be the mid point of it's 70 day journey to The olympic Stadium. Attempts to blip an image of the torch failed, but later in the year I'll have a real one to blip.
Yes, this is the big news I have kept quiet until today.
I knew a few months ago but had been asked to keep it quiet until the final confirmation came through.
The process started in July 2011 when a friend nominated me for my charity work, voluntary work with Athletics and Football, and the work I have done with students.
I then had to accept the nomination, and approve the citation that was written about me. Nothing was done without my knowledge or approval.
Just before Christmas I received an email that was a page long. The only words I remember are "You have been selected"
Then I January I had to complete a very long form so they could do background and security checks.
Finally on Friday I got the final confirmation that I will be carrying the Torch in St Annes on june 23rd. All I know beyond this is that my stretch will be between 6.20 and 7.30 am on that day.
An early start? Well, I'm hardly likely to sleep the night before anyway!
To be nominated was a thrill. To be actually carrying the Torch is beyond my wildest thoughts. I still don't believe this is actually happening to me.
